無求與有求

My friend just wrote me this.

You and Jien always mention less desire and know what is enough, demand less and thus feeling satisfied always. Well, good philosophy, nothing wrong with this. Just that I or maybe jeff might post a different attitude, we actually show there is some "want and desire" in life to gain more satisfaction.

Now I don't understand one thing, how could person who announce less desire have built-up loans while person who declare to desire something has nothing, virtually debt free? Logically this does not make sense right? Isn't it should be the other way around?

Ahh, not going into the arguement of who is right and what justification is behind, turth is reality and mindset does not match. One has to be honest to oneself, you actually have more desire and more needs. I think you need to change your title to: "You Qiu".

"Realizing insufficiency will lead to a contented heart, with desire one knows where demand lies."

With this, I respect the hunger and motive behind, as a man you rise the guts and go after your prey, honestly.

It's all in perspective, Jen. There is only a fine line between "wu qiu" and "you qiu".

I agree that "wu qiu" is a noble word. There are very few people can be that. The "wu qiu" that I refer to is more like, buying a car rather than a fancy BMW that doesn't fit our lifestyle; having a house rather than a mansion that we only use 25% of the space.

It is not different perspective if we both are doing the same thing but call it differently.

There is basically no way to compare personal need. How do one know if one only need 25% space of the mansion and will be sufficient? How do one know buying BMW is not too low class or high class? One can just make up a reason, believes in the reason he made up and think that he is justified to the reason, thus do so because of the reason he made up and explained the reasons and actions followed. All these will make perfect sense to the person. Depending on one's talent, degree of open-mindness and stubborness, one will always believe the reason one created and probably never in life will one question the truth in it. In US, this is also categorized as "human rights" and no one questions or ask the definition to it. (it is a taboo to ask)

Though, when the earth is not perfectly round, it is not perfectly round. There is truth to everything.

If you and me are after some materials, and believe that there is never a day you will achieve "Wu-Qiu". Perhaps you are defining your mindset with a little offset. Perhaps, this will also lead to deeper saddening.

Give you another example: I can no longer enjoy smoking anymore because every cigratte I lid, I lid with guilt. I wanna stop but I didn't. One can't enjoy satisfaction anymore because every "prey" one purchased, one bought with guilt. This will lead to one result, for example, You want and can afford a top of the line Driver, but you purchased the outdated and least costing Driver. You have had guilt, you have fear to ultimate satisfaction. You have fear from guilt.

"Wu-Qiu" can not be a goal, because "Wu-Qiu" itself suppose to be empty. How can one go after an "Emptiness"? Esepcially when one still has desire to have certain content to the mindset? "Knowing Enough" is inrelevant because one cannot define "enough" objectively, but "knowing your limitation" will stop where you can. Isn't this more realistic? e.g. what does "Knowing enough golf" mean to you? Nothing really. Though, knowing your limitation that you can never break 90, this is cruel, but meaningful yet striking.

Well said and point taken. Knowing our limitations is defintely more realistic. Unfortunately, one's talent might be limited by one so called limitation because one can only explore their limitations by pushing to the limits.

The other thing that I found very useful is one of Bill Swanson's 25 Unwritten Rules of Management.

"Constantly review developments to make sure that the acutal benefits are what they are supposed to be. Avoid Newton's law."

If one can do this, one will be able to avoid a lot of costly mistakes.
